Healthier Apple Pie Submit Your Recipe
 
 
Ingredients:

For the Pie Dough:

1 cup organic flour

½ cup plus 3 tablespoons oat flour

½ cup spelt flour

½ cup barley flour

½ cup brown rice flour

¼ teaspoon salt

1 tablespoon Wholesome Sweeteners’ Organic Sucanat

1 tablespoon margarine

1 tablespoon shortening

5 ounces ice water

 

For the Filling:

8 Granny Smith apples

½ teaspoon cinnamon

2 tablespoons Wholesome Sweeteners’ Organic Sucanat

1 tablespoon organic flour

 

For the Crumb Topping:

¾ cup organic flour

1 cup quick oats

½ cup Wholesome Sweeteners’ Organic Sucanat

¼ teaspoon salt

½ cup walnuts

4 tablespoons margarine
 
Directions :

Preheat oven to 400 degrees F.

 

For the pie dough, place dry ingredients in a bowl or food processor and blend.  Cut in margarine and shortening, add ice water and process until dough starts to stick together, form into a flat disk and roll out to form bottom crust.  Place in a 9-inch pie pan.

 

To make the filling, peel, core and slice the apples; add cinnamon, Sucanat and flour.  Toss to mix, pile into the pie pan.

 

For the crumb topping, mix all the ingredients together.  Pile on top of apples in a mound and press down.

 

Bake at 400 degrees F for 30 minutes.  Reduce oven to 350 degrees F and bake another 30 minutes or until apples are tender and top is golden brown.  Cool on rack.
