Mum and babe at the Fair-Trade funded Kasinthula Health Clinic.

October provides us all with an opportunity to focus attention on the real benefits of Fair Trade. In the modern world, we take so much for granted ... For many of us, a nearby clinic, clean water and reliable tools to get the job done are among life's "basics." For sugar cane farmers' cooperatives in Malawi and Paraguay they were luxuries, things just beyond reach -- until recently. In the fall of 2005, a farmer's cooperative in Malawi began building a community clinic and drilled holes deep into the African soil to bring clean, safe water to their village. And for a co-op in Paraguay, back-bending labor in cane fields was relieved when they bought their first-ever tractor to push, pull, and plow. Both co-ops are benefiting from Fair Trade agreements with Wholesome Sweeteners, Inc. Read all about it! |

| And the Fair Trade movement spreads...

Via Rail Canada goes Fair Trade! VIA Rail Canada today announced that it will now serve only 100 percent fair trade certified coffee to its customers on its trains throughout Canada. Thanks to its partnership with TransFair Canada, VIA was able to select a supplier that guarantees the origin and the quality of the product grown according to strict environmental norms, while helping to improve living conditions for farmers and workers involved in its production. Media PA: The First Fair Trade Town in the US It's official. Not only is this tiny borough the county seat, known as "Everybody's Home Town," it became the "First Fair Trade Town in the U.S." as shoppers and strollers enjoyed Media's Second Saturday of the Month event. To qualify, a certain percentage of retailers and institutions must sell and use fair trade products and offer ongoing promotion of fair trade. Drew Arata, owner of Earth and State on State Street, said, "Media is a microcosm for the entire United States. My belief is that you won't be able to avoid Fair Trade in the future and we might as well start trying to define what it means in the United States." Interested in learning more? THE BIG PICTURE.... |
 |
|
Wholesomes'commitment to Fair Trade, organic cultivation practices, and sustainability reach beyond our product line. CEO Nigel Willerton and Marketing Director Pauline McKee are key participants in the nationwide effort to raise awareness about the environmental and social value of business strategies that are dedicated to the environment as well as the bottom line.
In recent months, Nigel has traveled the sugar-producing world to visit with our co-op partners and assure that our Fair Trade agreements are providing for everyone. Nigel and Pauline play critical roles in the development and implementation of the Organic Trade Association's efforts to develop and expand organically oriented businesses. And Wholesome Sweeteners is also working with The Organic Center, supporting efforts to communicate the benefits of organic farming and products to society. Wholesome Sweeteners further advocates the cause within the grocery and gourmet food industry. From Anaheim to New York City, from Vancouver BC to South Carolina, the past year's trade shows have provided literally thousands of opportunities to help other vendors and retailers understand the importance of growing organically, supporting organic practices and the real value of Fair Trade programs and the difference they can make.
