We've all heard it ... "An apple a day keeps the doctor away." While we'll leave the technical merits of the old adage to the physicians and nutritionists, we love the idea. Imagine indulging in all that crunchy deliciousness every day. There is nothing like biting into a crisp apple, then slowly savoring each sweet mouthful. For many of us, it's more in keeping with "Comfort me with apples..."
Though certain apples are nearly always available, in the next few weeks, grocery stores and farmers markets across the country will be welcoming the first of this season's regional specialties. There are literally hundreds of varieties for us to enjoy: early season, late season; big apples, little apples; sugary sweet, very tart; baking apples, eating apples. Apples are grown in 36 of the lower 48 states. In our book, they're all good!

| Sugar Clubber Karen thinks that dipping apples in just a bit of honey is the perfect way to be comforted with apples. | Here are some of our new favorite ways to serve up all this delicious crunchiness--be it morning, noon or night!

Do you have a favorite apple recipe to share? If so, please send the recipe to Info@OrganicSugars.biz by August 21, 2009, with "Apple-a-day" in the subject line and be sure to include your name, shipping address and phone number in the body of the message. We'll select the top three from among our favorite recipes and send the lucky chefs a Back-to-School Fair Trade Basket (that you can enjoy even if you don't have any "back-to-school" types in your household).

If you've been a Sugar Club member for a while, you know that Wholesome Sweeteners is committed to fair trade. Because of your support, we're ever more inspired by its potential to create social and economic opportunities in the developing world. Since we introduced the first Fair Trade Certified sweeteners in 2005, we've paid more than $1.6 million in social premiums to our cooperative partners, and we've seen the "fair trade family" grow to include hundreds of products as well as thousands of individual households, faith-based groups, colleges and universities, businesses and even entire communities.
About 6 months ago, a grassroots coalition joined together to bring greater focus to the fair trade cause by committing to make our own homes fair trade zones and inviting First Lady Michelle Obama to make the White House a “Fair Trade Home" as well.
If you'd like to declare your commitment to fair trade principles and encourage Mrs. Obama to do the same, please visit http://www.fairtradewhitehouse.com/ and sign the petition. And stay tuned for news on our progress--and for those of you in the Washington DC area, Wholesome Sweeteners will be in Fair Trade Pavilion at the Green Festival October 10 & 11. We hope to see you there.

Congratulations to Faye T., Sandra Z., and Celeste P. for correctly identifying our New Product Development team's location in the last geo-quiz: our team is visiting Brazil's state of Piaui where we found delicious honey that's Fair Trade Certifiable and meets our USDA requirements for Certified Organic Honey. Stay tuned for news! And Faye, Sandy and Celeste, as promised, the randomly selected Fair Trade Gift Basket is on its way!
Next issue: Back-to-School! We're planning great things for kids--and parents, too.
And stay tuned for special news just for our Facebook fans.
