Going the Extra Mile-August 21, 2008

Sometimes, that extra mile makes all the difference. Nigel Willerton, Wholesome Sweeteners CEO, will do much more than an extra mile on September 7, 2008 at Sherborne Castle (right) in Dorset, England. In fact, Nigel will compete in the Ironman UK Triathlon. For those not familiar with Ironman, it is an endurance race consisting of three consecutive events - a 2.4 mile lake or ocean swim, 112 mile bike race and then a full 26.2 mile marathon. This is the first such event Nigel has entered but he's been training for the past eight months in hopes of completing the course below the maximum 18 hours allowed.
The UK's Ironman Triathlon is a charity event. Nigel's goal is to raise money for the scholarship fund of The Westview School. The Westview School is a private, non-profit school, which was founded in 1981 to provide a structured, nurturing, and stimulating learning environment for children with learning differences, which prevent them from being successful in regular programs. Today, the school’s student body is mostly comprised of children ages two through middle school, who have been diagnosed with Aspergers Syndrome, autism or related conditions generally known as Pervasive Developmental Disorders (PDD).
Besides our Fair Trade programs, Wholesome supports a huge range of fundraising efforts each year here in the US, including breast cancer awareness, school fundraisers, green causes, animal protection and organic promotions. This is the first time that we've focused on one of our own. Nigel's son, Cameron, attends Westview and the school has quite literally transformed Cameron's life, allowing him to be able to successfully learn in a caring and challenging environment. Classrooms are ideal settings, with approximately 6 students and two teachers in each. Few grants are available to families who cannot afford the fees and Nigel is proud and eager to support The Westview School's scholarship fund so that other Houston-area kids living within the autism spectrum can benefit from the same opportunities.
Please sweeten Nigel's Ironman pain with your donation and enable a child who would not otherwise be able to attend to experience the wonderful benefits of this specialized school. We invite you to click on the school's crest and pledge your support to the Wholesome Sweeteners scholarship at The Westview School, make a donation online or send a USD Check payable to The Westview School.
We deeply appreciate your support.

We're all working to get that last mini-vacation in before school starts, and these days, most folks we know are heading for campgrounds. Pack along a touch of home with our homemade Golden Marshmallows and Homemade Graham Crackers, and your favorite chocolate bar (we suggest Fair Trade Certified chocolate, of course!).
How to make a proper campfire S'More:
Have a parent or responsible adult on hand. Open your container of graham cracker cookies. Break apart your chocolate bar. Set the cookies and chocolate aside. Build a small campfire. Find a good stick or skewer. Skewer the marshmallows. Hold the marshmallow skewer above the fire until the marshmallows just begin to melt (some like them charred, others prefer a gently yielding goo). Put the ooey-gooey melted marshmallow on a cookie, top with a bit of chocolate, and top it all with another cookie. Blow on the gooey part couple times to be sure that you don't burn your mouth and take a bite.
Finish that cookie, then ask for "S'More, please!"
